The Hellenic Association of Greek Law Firms held on February 1st, 2018 an event on the legislative framework of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) taking effect May 2018. Ms. Ioanna Vergeti, Senior Associate of Calavros and Partners attended the event, which was followed by interesting discussions on the GDPR’s business impact and other key issues arising from its application. The new GDPR entails the biggest change to the data protection laws for almost the last 20 years. As the date of the GDPR’s entry into force is fast approaching, the main compliance requirements were laid down in the comprehensive presentations of the speakers of the conference. The challenges companies are encountering in their preparation to reconsider the processes in place and to establish new systems to comply with the new standards set for the protection of the individuals’ rights regarding their data, as well as the obligation for the appointment of a Data Protection Officer were highlighted at the event. Given that the GDPR leaves several matters open to interpretation, the relevant bill and discussions to follow are anticipated with great interest.
